At Feather & Twigs, we’ve always believed that a good gift should feel as lovely to give as it does to receive.
Over recent years, we’ve noticed a change in the way people choose gifts. It’s becoming less about simply finding something and more about finding the right thing.
We want to know who made it. Where it came from. What it’s made from. Whether it will be used and enjoyed. And increasingly, whether buying it supports the sort of businesses, makers and values we care about.
For us, that’s what conscious gifting is really about.
It doesn’t mean everything has to be perfect. It simply means giving with a little more thought.
Conscious gifting is about looking beyond the wrapping paper.
Perhaps it’s a candle poured in Cornwall by a company that has spent generations perfecting its craft. A piece of jewellery handmade by an independent maker. A vegan hand balm produced in small batches. Or a beautiful piece for the home that will be brought out and enjoyed season after season.
It can mean choosing products made using more sustainable materials, supporting British makers, reducing unnecessary packaging or simply buying one lovely thing that will be treasured rather than several things that won't.
At Feather & Twigs, those considerations play an important part in how we choose what comes into our shop.
One of the joys of being an independent retailer is getting to know the stories behind the things we sell.
We love discovering makers and brands that care about their products — businesses where craftsmanship, provenance, creativity and quality still matter.
You'll find British names such as St Eval, alongside independent artists, illustrators, ceramicists and makers whose work has a personality that mass-produced products often struggle to replicate.
We also seek out vegan and cruelty-free beauty and accessories, products made in smaller batches and pieces created using traditional skills or more considered materials.
Not because we want to follow a trend, but because we think these things add something to a gift.
When you know a little about the hands, ideas and craftsmanship behind something, it somehow means more.
We’ve probably all bought one: the emergency present.
Something picked up because we needed a gift quickly rather than because it was particularly right for the person receiving it.
Sometimes convenience is necessary — life is busy. But we're seeing more customers looking for alternatives to the endless cycle of buy, give, forget and replace.
Instead, they want things that will actually be used.
A beautiful candle that fills a home with fragrance. A favourite mug that becomes part of the morning routine. A vase that comes out every spring. A notebook filled with ideas. A piece of jewellery worn again and again.
These don't necessarily need to be expensive gifts. Thoughtfulness isn't determined by the price tag.
Often it's the small present that says “I saw this and immediately thought of you” that means the most.
Conscious shopping also has another important benefit: it helps keep creativity and traditional skills alive.
Many of the artists and makers we work with are exactly that — makers.
They're not large marketing departments or multinational businesses. They're people who paint, sew, felt, illustrate, pour candles, design jewellery or create beautiful things with their hands.
Independent shops like Feather & Twigs provide a bridge between those makers and the people who will appreciate their work.
When you buy something handmade or created by a small independent business, you're not simply purchasing an object. You're helping that maker continue doing what they do best.
And we think that's worth supporting.
There was perhaps a time when sustainable shopping conjured up images of worthy-but-not-particularly-beautiful products.
Thankfully, things have moved on.
We believe beautiful design and more conscious choices can sit happily together.
A gift can be colourful, luxurious, funny, stylish or indulgent while still being thoughtfully made. It can come from a British maker, use vegan-friendly materials, be designed to last or simply replace something disposable with something you'll use for years.
We don't expect our customers to scrutinise every purchase or achieve some impossible version of perfectly sustainable living.
We certainly don't pretend that every product has zero impact.
Instead, we believe in making better choices where we can and being increasingly thoughtful about what we bring into our homes.
The internet has given us almost unlimited choice, but unlimited choice isn't always helpful.
Sometimes you don't want 10,000 possible birthday presents.
You want ten really good ones.
That's where we believe independent shops still have an important role to play.
At Feather & Twigs, we edit rather than simply accumulate. We look for products with character, quality and a reason for being there. We consider whether we'd give them ourselves, whether they feel special enough to receive and whether they sit naturally alongside the other things we love.
It means our collections will never contain everything.
And that's rather the point.
We want Feather & Twigs to feel like the friend who says, “I've found something I think they'll love.”
Conscious gifting doesn't require a rule book.
It might mean choosing a locally made gift rather than something mass-produced.
It might mean selecting a vegan beauty product, supporting a British artist, choosing a reusable piece for the home or spending a little more on something designed to last.
It could even mean giving less.
What matters is the thought behind it.
Because ultimately, a present is a way of telling somebody I know you. I appreciate you. I thought about what would make you smile.
And when the product has a story of its own, that sentiment becomes even more meaningful.
