At Feather & Twigs, we believe there is something very special about knowing who made the things we bring into our homes.
Behind a handmade bag, piece of artwork, candle, ceramic mug or bar of soap is a person. Someone has had the idea, developed the design, sourced the materials and spent time learning and perfecting the skills needed to make it.
That is why supporting British makers, artists, designers and small independent businesses is such an important part of what we do.
For us, buying British isn't simply about where something was made. It's about people, skills, creativity and keeping small businesses thriving.
When we look at a handmade product, we don't just see the finished piece.
We think about everything that happened before it reached our shelves.
A crocheted bag might have taken hours to make by hand. An artist may have spent days creating an original picture before developing it into prints. A ceramicist has designed, shaped, glazed and fired their work. A soap maker has experimented with ingredients and fragrances until they have created exactly the product they wanted.
These aren't products that simply appear at the end of a production line.
They represent time, patience, experience and skill.
And because they have been made by people rather than produced anonymously in huge quantities, there are often tiny differences between individual pieces.
We think that's part of their beauty.
There's an important distinction.
The British makers and artisans we work with are talented professionals who have spent years developing their craft.
Their workshop might happen to be a studio, kitchen, converted barn or room at home, but the products they create require genuine expertise.
When you buy something handmade, you're paying for far more than the raw materials.
You're paying for the years it took somebody to learn their craft, the hours spent designing and developing the product, their equipment, packaging, photography and all the unseen work involved in running a small creative business.
Then there is the actual time spent making your individual piece.
That deserves to be valued.
Being wonderfully creative doesn't automatically make somebody a natural salesperson.
In fact, many of the makers we meet would much rather spend their day painting, sewing, crocheting, designing, pouring, illustrating or making than worrying about websites, social media, advertising and algorithms.
And that's where independent retailers such as Feather & Twigs have an important role.
We can be their shop window.
We discover their work, buy their collections, display them in our Croston store, photograph and feature them online, talk about their stories and introduce them to customers who might never otherwise have found them.
It means our makers can spend more of their time doing what they're brilliant at.
Creating.
Some of our favourite collections demonstrate exactly why this matters.
We love discovering local artists and artisans, where you can genuinely see the hand of the maker in the finished product.
A hand-crocheted bag by Annabelle, for example, has taken somebody's time and skill to create stitch by stitch. That makes it very different from an accessory manufactured by the thousand.
Our artists bring another dimension to the shop. Their pictures aren't simply decorative products; they're someone's interpretation of a landscape, animal, season or moment.
And when that work celebrates our countryside and communities, there is an additional connection between the maker, the place and the person who eventually takes it home.
Supporting British businesses also helps preserve skills that could otherwise gradually disappear.
We are fortunate to work with British brands and makers who continue to design and create products with real character.
Sam Wilson's pictures and homeware bring British countryside influences into everyday homes, while the wonderful illustrations of Anna Wright turn something as simple as choosing a card into a small pleasure.
Cosy Cottage produces soaps and balms in small batches, combining traditional making with a thoughtful approach to ingredients and production.
We also love the personality that designers such as Susan Ballard and Morgan & Wright bring to mugs, ceramics and homeware.
Different businesses, different crafts and different stories — but something connects them all.
Somebody cared about creating the product.
When you buy from a small maker, the effect of that purchase travels surprisingly far.
You support the person who made it.
You help them buy materials for their next collection.
You allow them to invest in equipment.
You give them the confidence to develop another idea.
And when you purchase their work through an independent retailer, you're supporting another small business too.
It's a chain of independents supporting independents.
That £20, £30 or £50 purchase might seem relatively small to the person making it, but collectively those purchases allow creative businesses to continue.
At Feather & Twigs, we don't see our makers simply as suppliers.
We see them as an important part of what makes our shop different.
We want to know their stories. We want to understand how things are made. We want to tell customers why a particular product deserves their attention.
And importantly, we want our makers to succeed.
When somebody picks up one of their products in our Croston shop, discovers it through our website or buys it as a gift for somebody hundreds of miles away, we're helping connect a maker with a customer.
That's one of the most rewarding parts of being an independent retailer.
We also think it's important to be realistic.
Not everything we sell — or everything any of us buys — can or needs to be handmade in Britain.
Instead, it's about making more considered choices where we can.
When we find something beautifully handmade, British-designed, locally created or produced by an independent business, we believe it's worth celebrating.
And when we can put a local artisan alongside an established British brand and allow both to find a new audience, that's even better.
Mass production has given us convenience and affordability, but handmade gives us something else.
Individuality.
There may be a slight variation in the glaze. A stitch might sit fractionally differently. Brush marks reveal the artist's hand. Colours might vary subtly between batches.
Those aren't faults.
They're reminders that a human being made something.
And increasingly, we think that's exactly what people are looking for.
We don't believe supporting British makers means filling our homes with more possessions.
Quite the opposite.
Choose something because you love it.
Buy a mug you'll reach for every morning. Choose artwork you still want to look at years from now. Give someone a handmade bag they'll actually use. Light the beautifully made candle rather than saving it. Enjoy the soap. Wear the jewellery.
And when you give something handmade, tell the recipient a little about who made it.
That story becomes part of the gift.
Feather & Twigs may provide the shelves and the website, but behind many of the products you'll find here is another independent business.
