The buzz is building, and Croston is ready for one of its most cherished days of the yearâCoffee Day, always held on the first Saturday in July.
At its heart, Coffee Day is a Procession of Witnessâa beautiful tradition that brings together members of all three principal faiths in the village. Itâs a time for reflection, unity, and celebration, and for many in Croston, a chance to reconnect with neighbours and friends, including those whoâve long since moved away but return for this special occasion.
đ A History Woven into the Village
Coffee Day has roots deeper than many remember. Some say it harks back to an Old English custom, when tenants would pay their dues to the local squire andâperhaps as a rewardâreceive coffee and a bun at the end. Others link it purely to the post-procession treat. Whatever the origin, the warmth of the day has endured through generations.
Itâs a resilient tradition too. Though the celebration was once cancelled during wartime in 1915 and again in 1963 thanks to a spectacular thunderstorm (those poor soggy banners!), the spirit of Coffee Day has never been dampened.
đ More Than a ProcessionâItâs a Day for Everyone
While the roots are reverent, the day itself is bursting with joy. Streets are filled with music, laughter, and colourâand yes, thereâs even a fun fair for children, making it an event the whole family can enjoy.

At Feather and Twigs, weâve always believed in celebrating the makers and growers behind the scenesâthe hands that nurture, the minds that dream, and the hearts that care. One of those quiet cornerstones is Lyndene, a traditional market garden nestled in Tarleton, Lancashire. Their ethos? Keep it seasonal. Keep it local. Keep it grounded. And we love them for it. Lyndene supplies us with fresh flowers on an ad-hoc basis, depending on the seasonâs rhythm and the glasshouse glow
